Prerequisites
This qualification is aimed at those over 16 who are able to undertake the responsibilities associated with being a workplace emergency first aider. Learners between 14-16 years can undertake the qualification, however they should not be relied upon by employers to be a sole emergency first aider. Due to the language of the assessment, it is recommended that learners have sufficient command of the English language in order to understand the assessment and to undertake the recommended assessment methods. Attendees will be required to demonstrate First Aid procedures as they would in a real work environment. This includes providing CPR to a casualty who is on the floor, therefore be physically capable of doing so. There are no other pre-requisites for this qualification
Certification
The qualification is valid for three years from the date of achievement. It is strongly recommended by the Health and Safety Executive that the learner attends annual refresher training. The learner will need to complete the full course again to requalify for a further three years. On expiry of the qualification the HSE guidance states that the First Aider is no longer considered competent to act as a First Aider in the workplace. It is prudent to arrange requalification before expiry to ensure that a workplace is not left with a shortfall of qualified First Aiders
Reasonable Adjustments
All learners are required to complete the assessment criteria in a manner appropriate to the purpose of the qualification. For this qualification learners must be able to perform relevant practical tasks on the floor during the summative assessment. The prescribed assessment methods for this qualification should not unfairly disadvantage learners, who would otherwise be able to demonstrate competence in the assessment criteria and in line with the purpose of the qualification. If you feel the assessment methods above would disadvantage you, please contact your centre to discuss reasonable adjustment.
COVID-19 Safe Distance Learning
We would like to re-assure our clients that our trainers are promoting a safe and hygienic environment in the training room when delivering training. This will include delegates regularly being asked to wipe their hands with alcohol based sanitiser. When carrying out CPR on the manikins the trainer has Alcohol wipes, trionic wipes and CPR Face shields as advised by our awarding body.
Assessment
The qualification is assessed through practical demonstration and oral questioning. Scenarios will be set to enable a learner to demonstrate their knowledge and practical skills.
During the practical assessment, the learner will be asked supporting questions by the Trainer/Assessor.
The practical assessment is ongoing throughout the course but the Trainer/Assessor will make learners aware of when they are being assessed. Learners will be assessed on:
- Primary survey and the recovery position
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the safe use of an Automated External Defibrillator •
- Choking
- Major bleeding and shock
- Major seizures
- Minor injuries The learner must satisfactorily complete each scenario to successfully pass the practical assessment.
There is no grading of the assessment; learners pass or are referred. Trainer/Assessors may also ask a learner additional questions if felt necessary to confirm their knowledge and understanding
