Course Duration
This is a classroom-based course of 6 contact hours.
Syllabus
The course is made up of practical and theoretical sessions delivered by your Instructor who will provide a detailed course programme.
At the end of the course, learners will be able to:
- Explain benefits of oxygen therapy
- Identify indications for the use of oxygen
- Explain contraindications prohibiting use of oxygen
- Explain dangers of using compressed gas
Outline health and safety rules for the: Use, Storage, Handling of oxygen - Carry out operational checks in preparation for use of oxygen therapy equipment
- Identify when oxygen therapy is required

- Non re-breather mask
- Bag, valve and mask
- Administer oxygen to a patient in line with agreed ways of working
Prerequisites
The qualification is available to learners aged 16 or over. Due to the practical nature of the assessment there are physical demands and learners must be able to demonstrate their skills as in a real-life situation. An example of this would be to demonstrate CPR on a manikin at floor level. It is recommended that learners should hold a minimum of Level 1 in literacy or equivalent to undertake this qualification. It may be possible to allocate a reasonable adjustment to a learner who has a disability, medical condition or learning need; learners should contact their training provider to discuss. Any reasonable adjustments granted must be in line with the FAA Reasonable Adjustments Policy
Assessment
ASSESSMENT INFORMATION The qualification is assessed through practical demonstration, oral questioning and written assessment. A learner must successfully pass both the written and practical assessments to achieve the qualification. There is no grading of the assessment; learners pass or are referred.
Practical assessment Scenarios will be set to enable a learner to demonstrate their knowledge and practical skills. During the practical assessment, the learner will be asked supporting questions by the Trainer/Assessor. The practical assessment is ongoing throughout the course but the Trainer/Assessor will make learners aware of when they are being assessed.
The learners will be assessed on:
• Initial assessment
• Safe use of the non re-breather
• Managing a scenario requiring the use of oxygen
• Managing the use of oxygen using the required flow rate
• The operational checks in preparation for use
The learner must satisfactorily complete each scenario to successfully pass the practical assessment. Written assessment The learner will complete a written assessment paper containing 10 open and multiple choice questions needing to achieve a minimum of 7 out of 10 to pass.
The duration of the assessment is 30 minutes. An example question is ‘What is hypoxia?’ Trainer/Assessors may also ask a learner additional questions if felt necessary to confirm their knowledge and understanding.
Reasonable Adjustments
Learners are required to complete the assessments in a manner appropriate to the purpose of the qualification. The prescribed assessment methods for this qualification should not unfairly disadvantage learners who would otherwise be able to demonstrate competence in line with the purpose of the qualification. Learners should contact their centre to discuss reasonable adjustment if they feel the prescribed assessment methods would disadvantage them.
Certification
This qualification lasts for 3 years. To renew the qualification, learners will need to retake the full course. However, it is recommended that during the 3-year period, the learners attend annual refresher courses.
